POLICIES & GUIDELINES

New Policies on Animal Experimentation and Research Involving Human Participants

Quality research goes hand in hand with the welfare of research animals and participants. To further our commitment to ethical research and spell out institutional expectations, the University is introducing two policies with immediate effect:

Policy on the Care and Use of Animals in Teaching and Research

Policy on the Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Human Participants

The policies are developed with a view to empowering our research community to navigate and uphold the legal, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards in research practices pertinent to animals and human participants.

The policies have been approved by the Research Committee of the Senate, on the recommendation of the Animal Ethics Committee and Human and Artefacts Research Ethics Committee.

Completion Report for Ethics & Safety Protocols

Obtaining ethics and safety approval for your research is one of the critical steps toward compliance. Since 2021, the University has adopted Tick@Lab, our one-stop online platform for research compliance applications and reviews. A completion report feature has now been introduced. Researchers are expected to duly close their protocols by filing a completion declaration/report. Instructions will be available in an email reminder before protocol expiration. Please refer to the latest Research Compliance Review Procedures for details.

For inquiries, please contact Tick@Lab Help Desk at 2358 5985 or crphelpdesk@ust.hk.

RECENT EVENT

The Research Grants Council (RGC) aims to promote dialogue and understanding of research-related issues between RGC members and the tertiary education sector. The RGC organizes an annual visit to each UGC-funded university to achieve this goal. Despite the pandemic-induced disruptions that caused the suspension of the RGC visit from 2020 to 2022, it finally resumed in 2023 with a visit to HKUST.

The RGC visit was held on June 8 and it attracted a record number of 154 RGC members from overseas and Hong Kong to the one-day program at HKUST’s Clear Water Bay campus.

This visit provided us with an excellent opportunity to showcase our research capabilities and engage in fruitful discussions on research-related issues with the RGC members and the academic community, ultimately contributing to the advancement of research in Hong Kong.
